They traditionally comes with a diameter slightly greater than the drilled hole through which it is to be inserted. The elasticity of these pins then applies a radial force across its length. To account for the compression, these pins come with a slot.
Cotter Pins/ Split Pins

These pins are used to secure an already fastened system. They are first bent into the perfect shape to be used with other fasteners. They are one of the very few wire-formed fasteners which can be used externally in equipment building or home constructions.
Solid Dowel Pins

They are designed to be inserted in pre-drilled pilot holes. To reduce the impact on surfaces, the end of the threads on either side is designed as a taper.
Celvis Pins

These pins are similar to bolts but are only partially threaded and come with a cross hole to be fastened using a split pin.
